Sabah Al-Numani, spokesperson for the service of fight against terrorism of Iraq, said that soldiers of the Army and federal forces of security, supported by volunteers of the Sunni tribes, achieved major advances on Tuesday.
Land operations are supported by Iraqi air force, which allowed supporting troops of the Government to target the main governmental stronghold in this city, occupied by terrorists since May.
According to Al-Numani, the war actions are carried out after a month of arrangements and the siege laid to the city, located some 90 kilometers west of Baghdad and inhabited mostly by Sunni Muslims, although most of them oppose ISIL extremism.
The recovery of Ramadi and Fallujah, another strategic city neighboring Syria in Al-Anbar, will allow cutting off supplies, as well as isolating ISIL strongholds, military strategists told the state television.
